Sophia 21 is a limited-edition handbag created by founder and designer Anya Sushko to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month, individuality and the beauty of being different.

The design is inspired by Anya’s daughter, Sophia, and by Trisomy 21 — the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 that causes Down syndrome. Across the front of the bag, 21 individually cut leather strips create a sculptural pattern, while the twisting lines subtly echo the form of DNA.

The very first original Sophia 21 bag has been created as a one-of-a-kind piece and will be donated to the live auction at the 21 Together Charity 10th Anniversary Gala. 21 Together is a Kent-based charity supporting children and young people with Down syndrome and their families, and has been an important part of Sophia and Anya’s own story.

Following the Gala, the Sophia 21 limited edition will be opened to the public for pre-orders throughout October. Only 10 bags will be available worldwide, with each piece individually numbered and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The original bag features a specially designed leather charm combining the Roman numeral X with an additional “I”. The X represents 21 Together’s 10-year anniversary, while its crossed form also echoes the shape of a chromosome. The additional “I” represents the extra chromosome associated with Trisomy 21. Customers ordering one of the limited-edition bags can choose to keep the original X and I design or personalise the charm with two initials, making each Sophia 21 even more individual.

Based on the signature Sophia crossbody, each bag is handmade in England using full-grain Italian leather and lined in beautifully soft turquoise goat suede. Contrast hand-stitching, carefully finished edges and an adjustable leather shoulder strap complete the design, with an optional chain strap offering another way to wear it.

More than a handbag, Sophia 21 is a celebration of difference, individuality, British craftsmanship and the unexpected beauty that can come from a life you may never have imagined.
